小見出しが付いています。

on demandは「要求［求め］に応じて」です。
この記事を読んで興味を持ったので、「short story vending machine」でググりました。簡潔にまとめている記事は一番上に出てくるこれでしょう。
見出しが Shorty Story Vending Machine とそのままです。一番にヒットするのも当然ですね。Atlas Obscuraの記事です。初めて聞く名前だったので調べてみたのですが、どうもウェブマガジンのようです。
With the touch of a button, you can read a randomly selected short story.
小見出しです。わかりやすいですね。
機械の説明がこれです。
… By pushing one of three buttons you can choose the length of your story—one, three, or five minutes—which will be automatically printed out from the dispenser like a receipt.
ボタンは3つで、それぞれ押すと1分、3分、5分の短編がレシートのような紙片に印刷されて出てきます。ちょっとした待ち時間や電車に乗っている間に読むのに丁度いい長さです。
A variety of genres are represented, including humor, horror, and fairy tales, and the randomness of what kind of story you may get is part of the fun. Another reason for the popularity of the Short Story Vending Machine is the excitement of reading a story that wasn’t written by a widely published author, but rather by an average Jane.
ジャンルはユーモア、ホラー、おとぎ話など（ここには書いてありませんが推理ものも）がランダムに出てきます。自分で選べないのですが、普段読まないジャンルの話に触れるいい機会となるでしょう。
2文目に面白表現があります。”a story that wasn’t written by a widely published author, but rather by an average Jane.”「広く出版されている著者ではなく、むしろ平均的なジェイン（ジェーン）によって書かれた物語」と訳すことができますが、ジェインって誰？と思いませんか。
Janeの前に冠詞のanが付いているのがポイントです。この時点で普通の使い方でないと気付いた人は英語のセンスがあります。実はaverage Janeでイディオムになっています。The Free Dictionaryによると、
An average, unexceptional, or ordinary girl or woman. Derived from the more common phrase “average Joe,” which generally refers to a boy or man.
と定義されています。Janeとは英語圏ではよく使用されていた名前です。そこから「ごく平均的な普通の女の子、もしくは女性」という意味が生じたわけです。
ですので Short Story Vending Machine から出てくる短編物語はプロの作家ではなく、アマチュアによって書かれた作品だということがわかります。アマチュアの作品披露の場になっているのです。
もう一つ記事を見てみましょう。2018年4月16日付のNew York Timesウェブ版に、The Vending Machine That Spits Out Short Stories というのがありました。spit outは「（唾）を吐き出す」という意味です。
Stories are shared many ways. They are recounted in books and magazines. They are read aloud around the campfire at night. They are randomly dispensed from stand-alone kiosks, doled out on strips of paper like grocery store receipts.
Wait, what was that last one?
書き出しが巧いですね。第一段落の最後の文がvending machineの説明です。
dispenseは言い換えるとgive outになります。
dole outは「（お金や食べ物など）を施す」「～を（少しずつ）分け与える」という意味です。
kioskは駅前や広場などにある簡易販売所を指すのですが、最近では日本のマクドナルドでも見られるようになってきた自立した注文・清算機や券売機もkioskと言っています。ここでは後者の意です。
grocery storeは食料雑貨店、言わば小さなスーパーです。
「それら（物語）は自立したキオスクからランダムに出され、スーパーのレシートのような紙片に少量出されます。」直訳するとこんな感じでしょうか。
New York Timesは費用に関しても記述があります。
… The dispensers cost $9,200 plus an additional $190 per month for content and software. The only thing that needs to be replaced is paper. The printed stories have a double life, shared an average of 2.1 times, said Ms. Leroy.
設置するのに約100万円、維持費として月に2万円かかるようです。この費用をどう見るかは人それぞれでしょう。
運営している会社「Short Édition」のサイトはこちらです。機械はShort Story Dispenserと名前が付いています。
活字離れに危機感を感じている企業や団体等が設置しているのでしょうが、日本でも展開してくれると私は嬉しいです。
