海外（英米）メディアがどう『令和』を伝えたかを各ウェブサイトで見てみました。
まずはアメリカのニュースネットワークであるCNNです。
タイトルは ‘Reiwa’: Japan announces dawn of a new era です。
The reign of the next Japanese emperor will be known as the “Reiwa” era, the Japanese government announced Monday, ahead of the coronation of Crown Prince Naruhito next month.
The era, whose name includes the character for “harmony,” will formally begin once the new Emperor is crowned on May 1.
元号は”the reign of the Japanese emperor”となっています。
日本のメディアでは天皇陛下や皇太子殿下の名前が紹介されることはあまりありませんが、海外メディアでは普通に出てきます。上記の引用では皇太子殿下が徳仁（なるひと）と出ているだけですが、続きを読んでいくと天皇陛下が明仁（あきひと）と出てきます。
『令和』の『和』をharmonyと訳していますが、『令』は具体的に訳されていませんでした。その代わりに安倍首相の談話を載せています。
また、元号を”Significant marker”として次のように紹介しています。
Eras are about more than who is the emperor of the day. They are also, for example, the basis of the Japanese calendar system: 2018 was Heisei 30, coming three decades after the era began.
While the current system aligns with the rule of the emperors, this has not always been the case. In the past, new eras were declared to mark historical moments.
「現在は天皇に合わせているが（一世一元の制）、昔は歴史の区切りとして新しい元号が制定された。」と現在と昔の使われ方にも触れられています。
次はイギリスの公共放送BBCです。
タイトルは Japan reveals name of new imperial era will be ‘Reiwa’ です。
Japan has announced that the name of its new imperial era, set to begin on 1 May, will be “Reiwa” – signifying order and harmony.
元号は”its new imperial era”とありますので”Japan’s imperial era”でしょうか。
『令和』を”order and harmony”としてます。これが物議を醸した英訳ですね。ただし、続きを見ると『令』に他の訳も当てています。
What does Reiwa mean?と小見出しの付いたパラグラフです。
The term for the new era is made up of the two characters Rei and Wa. Rei can mean “commands” or “order”, as well as “auspicious” or “good”.
Wa often means “harmony”, and is also used in the Japanese word for “peace” – “hei-wa”.
『令』をcommands / order（命令）だけでなく、auspicious（めでたい；幸運な）やgoodとも訳しています。もちろん政府は後者の意味で説明しています。
また、How significant is an imperial era?というパラグラフでは元号の意義を説明しています。
Each gengo’s name aims to set the tone for the upcoming decades, and remains significant to most Japanese in their daily life.
It appears on coins, newspapers, driving licences and official paperwork.
「日常生活に根付いていて、硬貨、新聞、運転免許証や公文書で見られる。」と紹介していますが、こちらが普段意識していないことを指摘しています。
新聞を見ましょう。まずはアメリカの新聞 Washington Post です。

Japan announced “Reiwa,” two characters that symbolize auspiciousness and harmony, as the name for a new era under a new emperor.
The name, carefully selected by a panel of experts and the government under strict secrecy, will be used as the basis for Japan’s unique Imperial calendar system after Crown Prince Naruhito takes over the Chrysanthemum Throne from his father on May 1.
The name of an era, or gengo, represents the zeitgeist of a period, just as the Roaring ’20s and Swinging ’60s encapsulated different decades in the United States, and the British remember the Victorian Age as a time of colonial expansion abroad and Protestant morality at home.
『令和』の意味を漢字それぞれ「吉兆」と「調和」である最初に説明しています。そして極秘に専門家と政府により選定が進められたと続きます。
元号は”Japan’s unique Imperial calendar system”となっています。
元号の説明では、ドイツ語である”zeitgeist”（時代精神）を使っています。アメリカの狂騒の20年代、活気ある60年代、イギリスのヴィクトリア時代のようなものと表していますが、ちょっと違いますよね。こんな風にして誤解が生じるのでしょう。
最後はイギリスの日刊紙 Daily Telegraph です。
Japan chooses new imperial era of ‘Reiwa’ from Japanese rather than Chinese source for first time が見出しです。
タイトルが特徴的ですね。『令和』が中国の出典ではなく日本の出典からということを述べています。
The name of Japan’s new imperial era unveiled on Monday was selected from Japanese rather than Chinese texts for the first time in more than 1,000 years, hinting at the government’s nationalist leanings.
Following months of secret discussions, the name of the new era was announced by the Japanese government as Reiwa, which can be translated as “beautiful harmony”.
元号は”Japan’s imperial era”となっています。初めて日本の古典から採用したことが政府のナショナリズム化（愛国主義化）を匂わせていると書いてあります。世界的にナショナリズムが台頭してきていますので、日本もその傾向が見られると言いたいのでしょうか。
Daily Telegraph は唯一『令和』を漢字をそれぞれ訳するのではなく、安倍首相の会見の内容から”beautiful harmony”と英訳しています。2日後に外務省が『令和』を”beautiful harmony”と説明するよう在外公館に指示したようです。他サイトも調べてみましたが、やはり4月１日の時点ではここだけがきちんと英訳されていたようです。
ここまで見たきたように、ひとつの事でも様々な報道のされ方があります。一つの情報だけだと偏りがあったり、必ずしも正確ではないことも見て取れます。世の中には様々な見方があるということを知り、自分で正しい情報を選択する必要もあるということが『令和』に関する報道だけでもわかるのではないでしょうか。BEYOND Study Labの生徒たちにはこういったことも教えていきます。
