Word of the Year 2021

今年もWord of the Yearが発表される時期になりました。去年は新型コロナウィルス関連の言葉ばかり選ばれていましたが、今年はどうでしょう。

まずはMerriam-Webster Dictionaryです。

vaccine

これが今年の言葉です。今年も新型コロナウィルス関連でした。「ワクチン」です。

以前の定義が下記です。

a preparation of killed microorganisms, living attenuated organisms, or living fully virulent organisms that is administered to produce or artificially increase immunity to a particular disease

難しい単語が多いです。preparation「製剤」、microorganism「微生物」、virulent「毒のある」、administer「＜薬＞を投与する」、immunity「免疫」です。ですので和訳すると「特定の病気に対する免疫を作るもしくは人工的に増やすために投与される、殺した微生物、生きているが弱毒化された微生物、または生きていて完全に毒性のある微生物から作られた製剤」となります。「殺した微生物から作られた製剤」が「不活性化ワクチン」、「生きているが弱毒化された微生物からから作られた製剤」が「生ワクチン」です。最後の「生きていて完全に毒性のある微生物から作られた製剤」は何を指しているのかよくわかりませんが「初期の天然痘ワクチン」のことではないかと考えられます。

この定義が次のように変更されました。

1 : a preparation that is administered (as by injection) to stimulate the body’s immune response against a specific infectious agent or disease: such as

a : an antigenic preparation of a typically inactivated or attenuated (see ATTENUATED sense 2) pathogenic agent (such as a bacterium or virus) or one of its components or products (such as a protein or toxin)

b : a preparation of genetic material (such as a strand of synthesized messenger RNA) that is used by the cells of the body to produce an antigenic substance (such as a fragment of virus spike protein)

また難しい単語が多いですね。stimulate「活性化する」infectious agent「感染病原体」、antigenic「抗原性（の）」、pathogenic agent「病原体」、components「構成要素」、toxin「毒素」、genetic「遺伝子の」、strand「(DNAの）鎖」、synthesized「合成された」、fragment「破片」、spike protein「スパイクタンパク質（？よくわかりません）」です。

和訳すると「特定の感染病原体や病気に対する体の免疫反応を活性化するために（注射等により）投与される製剤。例えば、a:通常不活性化や弱毒化された病原体またはその構成要素や（タンパク質や毒素のような）生成物のひとつから作られた抗原性の製剤、b:（ウイルスのスパイクタンパク質の破片のような）抗原性物質を製造するため体の細胞によって用いられる（合成メッセンジャーRNAの鎖のような）遺伝子物質から作られた製剤」となります。

新型コロナウィルスに対する新しいワクチンが開発されたために定義を新たにする必要があったわけです。時代を反映していますね。

vaccineの語源についても説明があります。

Vaccine comes from the Latin word for “cow,” vacca, because the term was initially used to refer to inoculation using doses of cowpox that, it was discovered, protect humans against smallpox. This word is a relatively recent one in English, dating back to the 1880s.

inoculation「接種」、cowpox「牛痘」、smallpox「天然痘」です。天然痘に感染するのを防ぐために牛痘を接種したのがワクチンの始まりです。そこでラテン語で牛を表すvaccaからvaccineという言葉が生まれたわけです。

Merriam-Websterでは他に10の単語を選出しています。気になったものだけ紹介します。

2/10: Perseverance

これはNASAの火星探査機の名前です。2021年2月18日に無事火星に着陸して活動を開始しています。意味は”continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition; the action or condition or an instance of persevering; steadfastness”と定義されています。「困難、失敗、反対にも関わらず何かをする、達成する絶え間ない努力；その行動や状態、例」ですsteadfastnessは同義語です。英和辞典では「忍耐（力）」と訳されていることが多いです。コロナ禍の日本社会を表している言葉にも思われます。

4/10: Nomad

日本語でもノマドワーカーという言葉が浸透してきましたね。「遊牧民」という意味です。選出されたのはアカデミー賞３部門を獲得した映画Nomadlandの影響です。

6/10: Cicada

“any of a family (Cicadidae) of homopterous insects which have a stout body, wide blunt head, and large transparent wings and the males of which produce a loud buzzing noise usually by stridulation”が定義です。要するに「セミ」です。17年周期で大量発生するBrood Xという種のセミがいるのですが、2021年がその当たり年でした。そのせいで5月にcicadaを調べる回数が前年同月比1,442%増加したそうです。

8/10: Cisgender

定義は“of, relating to, or being a person whose gender identity corresponds with the sex the person had or was identified as having at birth”です。「生まれた時に持っていた、もしくは特定された性とその人の認識する性とが一致する人（の、に関連する）」です。transgender「トランスジェンダー」の反対の言葉と考えたらわかりやすいでしょう。トランスジェンダー同様日本語の概念にない言葉ですので、そのまま「シスジェンダー」と使われることでしょう。
